Diesellocomotief General Motors EMD-F7
De Amerkikaanse GM-EMD F7 locomotieven zijn dieselelektrische locomotieven van de F-serie van de fabrikant Electro-Motive Division (EMD), onderdeel van General Motors Diesel. De EMD-F7 is de opvolger van de bouwserie GM-EMD F3 De locomotieven werden gebruikt door verschillende spoorwegmaatschappijen in de VS maar ook in andere landen zoals b.v. Canada. De locomotieven waren oorspronkelijk bedoeld voor het trekken van goederentreinen, maar werd ook ingezet voor het trekken van personentreinen, zoals de "Super Chief", "El Capitan" en de "Santa Fe".
Ontwikkeling en Bedrijf
De GM-EMD F7 locomotieven waren dieselelektrische locomotieven van de Electro-Motive Division van General Motors en General Motors Diesel en was de opvolger van de Bouwserie EMD-F3. De locomotieven hadden een vermogen van 1.100 KW. Ze werden in de periode 1949 – 1953 gebouwd door EMD in de USA en General Motors Canada. Hiervan werden 3717 stuks (2285 A-units en 1432 B-units) van deze locomotieven door Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in de USA gebouwd en 127 stuks (80 A-units en 47 B-units) door General Motors in Canada. De locomotieven waren verkrijgbaar in een A-unit (met cabine) en een B-unit (zonder cabine). De locomotieven waren zeer veelzijdig door de mogelijkheid van dubbeltractie. Twee A-units met stuurstand en meerdere B-units zonder stuurstand konden voor een bepaald vereist treinvermogen in tractie gekoppeld worden en van beide zijden uit synchroon geregeld worden.
De EMD-F7 locomotieven waren nog tot de jaren 70 op de Noord-Amerikaanse spoorwegen veelvuldig in gebruik. In Canada werden ze nog langer ingezet.
